). Launch an application, such as Word. Open some important documents.

). Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to open the Windows Task Manager and select the Processes tab and sort in descending order by memory usage. You will notice that WINWORD.EXE is somewhere at the top, using multiple MBs of memory.

). Now switch to Word and simply minimize. (Do not use the opportunity to minimize all windows taskbar).

). Back to Windows Task Manager and see where WINWORD.EXE is listed. Most likely you'll find it at the top. You usually need to scroll through the list to find Word. Now check how much RAM is in use. Surprised? Memory usage has been reduced enormously.

). Minimize any application you're currently working on, click the Minimize button, and you can increase the amount of RAM with a wide margin. Depending on the number and type of applications you use one, the difference may be as high as 50 percent more of RAM.

In any multitasking system, minimizing an application means that will not be used by the user at the time. Therefore, the operating system automatically makes the virtual memory and maintain applications using bare minimum amount of code in physical RAM.
